Key UN bodies responds to Kabul terrorist attack

On Saturday, January 27, an ambulance rigged with explosives was detonated in Kabul, Afghanistan, killing 95 and leaving over 190 people injured. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attackers reportedly used an ambulance bearing the emblem of the UN Assistance Mission for Afghanistan. This, according to Tadamachi Yamamoto, the head of the UNAMA, was in “clear violation of international humanitarian law”.

In a statement released by a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Guterres has expressed his “deepest condolences” to the families of the victims, and has “strongly [condemned] the deadly attack…”.

Indiscriminate attacks against civilians are grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law and can never be justified.”  “Those responsible for today’s attack must be brought to justice.

The UN Security Council has also condemned the attack in their own statement. They have “underlined the need” that all involved members of terrorist attacks, namely perpetrators, organizers financiers, and sponsors, should be held accountable and be brought to justice.

This attack comes shortly after a terrorist siege at Kabul’s Intercontinental hotel that occurred on January 21, where at least 22 people were killed.
