What We Do
United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) is the peak body for promoting the United Nations (UN) in Australia. Established in 1946 the UNAA engages Federal, state and local governments, business and community groups through educational and awareness programs, leadership development, speaker events, advocacy campaigns and national media activities.
As a non-government organisation and registered Australian charity UNAA works to inform, inspire and engage Australians about the work, goals and values of the United Nations to create a safer, fairer and more sustainable world.
Why We Do It
The UNAA works to promote the work and importance of the United Nations, to maintain and strengthen global peace and security; provide humanitarian relief; and promote human rights, environmental sustainability and economic development. We have an important role to play locally, nationally and globally and so do you.
How We Do It
The UNAA works across Australia to increase public awareness of and engagement in the United Nations. This includes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting the importance of United Nations reform and maintenance of the rules-based international order, and running events and programs on key issues affecting Australia and Australians. We focus on climate change, treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, rights of indigenous peoples and progress toward gender equality.
To progress this work, the UNAA is looking to expand our growing group of corporate and philanthropic partners.
Partnership Opportunities
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
A key part of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are critical to achieving a safer, fairer more sustainable world. Our objective is to increase awareness and understanding of the SDGs in Australia, through communications, co-created events and by building sustainable partnerships with governments, business, civil society and academia.
Climate Change
The UNAA believes in the vital importance of protecting the environment, the world’s oceans and combating climate change as part of creating a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. The SDGs were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, but there has been limited coordinated action or leadership on the SDGs in Australia and public awareness is low. Since 2016, Australia’s ranking on the SDGs has decreased from 17 to 38 on the World SDG Index.
High on Australians’ minds is climate change. Work with us to promote awareness, produce thought leadership events and workshops to facilitate progress toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
Study Tours to UN in New York or Geneva
The UNAA currently runs study tours to UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva. The tours provide young professionals, tertiary students and NGO leaders with an opportunity to visit United Nations headquarters and experience their operations first-hand. We are looking to expand these tours to new locations and to provide sponsored places to women and girls and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and those who otherwise would not be able to attend the tours.
Expansion Model UN Conference Programs
UNAA Model UN Conferences (MUNCs) teach students the skills of international negotiation through crises simulation. Currently held in Melbourne our goal is to expand nationally by 2020. In addition, we are focusing attention on securing support for increased participation of women and girls and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in programs modelled on the Permanent Forum on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Committee on the Status of Women.
UN Alumni Network
The United Nations Association of Australia, supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is launching a UN Alumni Network. This network is the first of its kind in Australia and will connect members to events, job opportunities, and other Australians who are or have worked in the UN system.
Reconciliation Action Plan
Support the launch of the UNAA’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and expansion of work to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.Our RAP will provide a framework to facilitate culturally appropriate practices and events across the UNAA to support First Nations Peoples, as well as promoting a more progressive culture within our organisation.
Thought Leadership
The UNAA produces thought leadership on it’s priority areas, being the issues affecting Australia and Australians, such as climate change, gender equality, the rights of Indigenous Peoples, the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers and working to increase awareness and education on the importance of the UN and the UN SDGs. Support our work by partnering to develop thought leadership and research in these important areas.
Digital Transformation
To better connect with the Australian public and promote the UN, we are looking to better understand our community and refresh/redevelop our digital ecosystem putting the customer/member/alumni at the centre of our transformation. This will assist in attracting new members, mobilising our existing volunteer base, connecting our partners and amplifying existing and new opportunities and ultimately increasing the awareness of how to achieve a safer, fairer and more sustainable world.
